The immediate former Deputy Governor in Ondo State, Alhaji Ali Olanusi, has said that the All Progressives Congress won the last Saturday’s governorship election in the state through the assistance of former chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party who defected to the APC.
The Independent National Electoral Commission declared a former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Chief Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN), winner of the election, having polled 244, 842, while the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Mr. Eyitayo Jegede, scored 150,380 votes and the Alliance for Democracy candidate, Chief Olusola Oke, came third with 126,889 votes.
Speaking with our correspondent in Akure, the Ondo State capital on Sunday, the former deputy governor said the result indicated that the APC was popular in the state and the election was free and fair.
Olanusi defected to the APC shortly before the 2015 presidential election and was later impeached by the state House of Assembly.
He said, “Without the input of the defectors, there is no way the APC could have won the election and we PDP members that defected to the APC are notable politicians in the 18 local government areas of Ondo State and we were not ready to compromise our stand on winning the election for the APC.
“We defectors in Akokoland outnumbered the initial APC members. We came and we have no other choice but to win the election. Those of us that defected, we regard ourselves as stakeholders and as a result we cannot afford to lose because if you lose, you lose everything.”
On the allegation of buying of votes by some APC chieftains in the state, the former deputy governor said the allegation was untrue, saying, “Nothing like that happened in Akokoland. In the Akoko area where I was, nobody sold or bought votes during the election.”
