The Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, has said students in tertiary institutions should be taught how to utilise the resources and opportunities in the environment to create wealth.
He said this at the 16th convocation ceremony of the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, Ogun State.
Adamu, who was represented by Dr. Joel Ojo, noted that this became necessary in the face of the current economic recession facing the country, adding that there was the need to correct the economic and structural imbalance.
He said, “Our institutions must address the structural imbalance in our economy and concentrate on the development of human capital and engage local strengths and resources to turn the economy around.
“Our students should be taught to utilise the resources and opportunities in our environment to create wealth.
“The polytechnic sector has an important role to play generally in manpower development and in the adaptation of innovations and research findings relevant to the needs of the society.”
Adamu said the Federal Ministry of Education was committed to ensuring that technical and vocational activities were accorded their rightful places in the educational development of the country.
The Rector of the polytechnic, Olusegun Aluko, said the institution, in line with the efforts of the Federal Government, had diversified into agriculture, having cultivated 65 hectares of oil palm plantation to generate funds for the institution.
The Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, said despite the challenge of inadequate funding for the education sector in the state, his administration had been providing affordable and qualitative education at all levels to the people.
A total of 14,248 graduands from 2010/2011 to 2015/2016 academic sessions graduated from different departments with various grades in both the Ordinary National Diploma and Higher National Diploma courses.
