The 2016 Asoju Oba Cup Table tennis Championships men’s singles champion, Rilwan Akanbi, has said his next target is to win a medal at the 2016 ITTF World Junior Championships in South Africa.
The competition will begin on November 30 in Cape Town.
Akanbi, who won the title at the Teslim Balogun Staduim in Lagos on Friday, has been listed to represent Nigeria at the ITTF tournament alongside Azeez Solanke, Amadi Omeh, Tobi Falana, Esther Oribamise, Ajoke Ojomu, Alimat Ayinla and Agnes Onoja.
Akanbi beat Solanke 4-3 to win his first major championship as a junior player at the Asoju Oba Cup.
“I’m very happy to win the Asoju Oba but the next thing on my mind is the tournament in South Africa. I want to celebrate winning an international medal this year as I have done in Lagos,” the player told our correspondent.
“The competition in South Africa is going to be tougher than the Asoju Oba Cup. The players there are going to be from the all over the world. The two competitions we have played have helped to prepare me well for the world juniors and I hope that it will all go well.
“Beating the defending champion was not easy. It was one of the toughest matches I have played but I am excited that the match has also helped to prepare me for the competition in South Africa.”
