The Federal Government plans to hop on to international gateway services to shore up its dwindling revenue base, the Minister of Communications, Mr. Adebayo Shittu, has said.
He said this in Abuja on Monday at the inauguration of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on International Gateway Management Service, according to a statement made available to our correspondent by the Assistant Director of Information in the ministry, Mr. Ozoya Imohimi.
Gateway represents the access of the country to the world and it can be connected either through satellite, marine or international fibre cables.
Shittu said there was a need to generate revenue for the Federal Government from other sectors of the economy in the wake of the steep drop in revenue derivable from oil resources, which had impacted negatively on the economy.
“Apart from the importance of tracking incoming and outgoing voice and data traffic to and from Nigeria, there is the need to ensure that the Federal Government derives appropriate revenue from international voice and data traffic,” the minister said.
He expressed hope that the committee would discharge its responsibilities well and tasked the members to get to work immediately.
The committee is chaired by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Communications, Mr. Sonny Echono, while other members were drawn from ministries of Communications, Finance and Justice, as well as the Office of the National Security Adviser, Department of State Services, National Information Technology Development Agency and Galaxy Backbone Limited.
The committee is expected to work out modalities and framework, including agreement between the Federal Government and the Gateway Service Manager, for actualising the deployment of gateway communications tracking technology in Nigeria.
The report of the committee is expected in four weeks from the date of its inaugural meeting.
